The Therapist is IN

Last November mommy bloggers were all a Twitter over an ad Motrin ran on its website. The content of the ad isn’t so much important as the reality that within 48 hours mommy bloggers ran their own viral campaign on Twitter against the pharmaceutical giant. Sure, this isn’t breaking news if you’re knee-deep in the online social networking world. But what about the rest of the world? How do they view mommy bloggers? Is blogging the modern-day soap opera and bonbon metaphor? I ask this because someone underestimated us. We consume information voraciously and use it to make everyday decisions. Technology has made it ridiculously easy for us to share our likes and dislikes with virtually anyone. If you think differently, then have a chat with the VP of Marketing for McNeil Consumer Healthcare, Motrin’s parent company. She had to issue a public apology and scramble to remove the ad from video, online and print outlets. Ironically, she’s a mother of three.

So why bring this up now? I’m working on a piece about mommy bloggers for a friend’s project. It made me start thinking of why I do this everyday – I contribute to three blogs while mothering two kids, shuttling to-and-from afterschool activities and working as a freelance writer. What started as a networking and self-promotion tool has blossomed into a daily therapy session–no insurance claim required. It can feel very lonely, even in a sea of smiling faces at drop off and pick up. I try to be totally honest with my juggle in front of potentially millions of readers, so other women will know we all go through “it” (whatever “it” is at any given time).
